Susan Spencer is an American journalist and television news reporter. She is also the correspondent for 48 Hours Mystery and CBS Sunday Morning. She has worked as a 48 Hours correspondent since 1993.

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Spencer graduated from Michigan State University in 1968. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism. She also holds a master’s degree in journalism which she completed in 1969. Following school, she proceeded to work with WCBS-TV a television owned by CBS in New York. She worked there from 1971 to 1972. Additionally, she was a writer and producer for public affairs broadcast at WKPC-TV in Louisville, Kentucky.

She then worked as a reporter and co-anchor for WCCO-TV in Minneapolis from 1972 to 1977. The station is still owned by CBS. In 1977, she became part of CBS News Washington bureau and then became a correspondent in 1978. She was named s medical correspondent for CBS News in 1986. The following year (1987) to 1988 she became the anchor of CBS Sunday Night News. Consequently from 1987 through 1988, she was a substitute anchor and from 1988 through 1989, anchor of the Sunday edition of CBS Evening News. In 1989, she reported on the death of Emperor Hirohito of Japan and the Tiananmen Square protests. She reported major international events such as the Persian Gulf War in 1990 while she was based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Being a national correspondent, she covered the first inauguration of President Bill Clinton and the re-election campaign of President George Herbert Walker Bush. At that time, she was the CBS News White House correspondent and the main correspondent for its “Eye on America” segments. She became the correspondent for 48 Hours 1993 covering topics from drug wars in Colombia to custody battles in the United States.

Spencer has bagged some awards in her career as a journalist. She has been recognized with Emmy Awards for her 48-hour stories, an Environmental Defense Fund Award, and an RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Award for Overall Excellence for a story about the struggle of a child to find a match for an organ transplant.
