Tracy Smith is an American journalist serving as a correspondent for CBS Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley and 48 Hours. She previously served as both a national correspondent for The Early Show from August 2005 through May 2007 and co-anchor of the Saturday Early Show. Her role was taken over by Maggie Rodriguez. On CBS Sunday Morning, she covers news, and interviews celebrities like Kelly Clarkson, actor Michael Douglas, and others. She also covers arts and pop culture. As a reporter, her reports have revolved around many different topics for example medical breakthroughs in treating pediatric cancer, efforts to control the mosquito population, and couples choosing to go childless.
She was born in Wyoming Ohio and attended Boston University graduating cum laude with a bachelor of science degree. She also holds a master of arts degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Southern California. She graduated in 1993. Most of her reports were on teens in abusive relationships. The latter reports earned her a Golden Hugo from The Chicago International Film Festival.
Smith joined CBS in 2000. Her first role there was as a national correspondent for The Early Show. Additionally, she was a co-anchor of the Saturday Early Show and has reported on a variety of topics for the CBS Evening News. She also covered the September 111 terrorist attacks, the Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, the 2008 presidential campaign, and Hurricane Katrina.
She also served as a reporter for CBS’s 48 Hours. At 48 Hours, she reported widely on the topic of bullying, relationship violence, and one that involved surviving sexual abuse. She was also part of the team that was awarded an Emmy for Caught- a broadcast done by 48 Hours on the Boston Marathon Bombing.
Since she debuted her career in journalism, Smith has earned several awards and accolades to her name. She has earned four Daytime Emmy Awards as part of the “CBS Sunday Morning” team named Outstanding Morning Program, four Association of Women in Television Gracie Allen awards, a Golden Hugo from The Chicago International Film Festival, seven National Educational Media Network Awards, a Gold World Medal from the New York Festivals and a Wilbur Award from the Religion Communicators Council. The Wilbur Award was awarded to Smith as a correspondent; her husband, John D’Amelio, as producer; and Lauren Barnello, as producer/editor for the CBS Sunday Morning show “Heavenly Voices.”
