Renate Blauel is a German former tape operator, sound technician/engineer. She is best known as the former wife of Elton John. She appears as a character in Rocketman, the movie about Elton John’s early career. She is played by actress Celinde Schoenmaker, in what is her first screen role.
Her former husband was born Sir Elton Hercules John CH CBE. He is an English singer, songwriter, pianist, and composer. Collaborating with lyricist Bernie Taupin since 1967 on more than 30 albums, John has sold over 300 million records, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He has more than fifty Top 40 hits in the UK Singles Chart and US Billboard Hot 100, including seven number ones in the UK and nine in the US, as well as seven consecutive number-one albums in the US.
His tribute single “Candle in the Wind 1997”, rewritten in dedication to Diana, Princess of Wales, sold over 33 million copies worldwide and is the best-selling chart single of all time. According to Billboard in 2019, John is the top solo artist in US chart history (third overall), and the top Adult Contemporary artist of all time.

The divorce settlement was around £5 million, and she went on to live in a country house in Surrey purchased for her by Elton. She went on living a secluded life in the UK until the early 2000s when she is thought to have returned to Germany to care for her parents. It is unknown what she is up to today.
She launched legal action against her ex-husband, at the high court in June 2020. She was seeking an injunction against Sir Elton. In 2020, she sued John for writing about their relationship in his 2019 Me: Elton John Official Autobiography, which she claimed broke the terms of their divorce agreement.
