She currently resides in an old adobe home on the outskirts of the village of Tularosa, Ruth works daily in a studio she maintains at her home. She taught art for two and a half years at a junior high school in Colorado. This later assisted her a great deal in her work illustrating books for young people with such houses as Harcourt Brace and Random House.
After she left teaching she moved to Taos, New Mexico to devote her time fully to painting. She met her husband, author Gary Paulsen and it was a natural progression to illustrating books that depicted parts of their lives. Ultimately, there were illustrations for books combined with paintings, sketches, and watercolors in galleries from California to Minnesota to New Mexico.
According to her website, she said, “While following the flow of the book when illustrating I try to make each picture an individual piece of art so that while it enhances the story it could easily be framed and stand-aloneā¦”
She attended two years at Principia College studying the basics of art and graduated from the University of Colorado where she studied oil painting with Frank Sampson.
