Josh is famously known for being the partner of Kal Penn, an American actor and former White House staff member in the Barack Obama administration. Penn is recognized for his role portraying Lawrence Kutner on the television program House, as well as the character Kumar Patel in the Harold & Kumar film series. He is also known for his performance in the film The Namesake. Penn has taught at the University of Pennsylvania in the Cinema Studies Program as a visiting lecturer.
In April 2009, Penn joined the Obama administration as the Principal Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement. This necessitated that his TV character, Lawrence Kutner, be written out of House. He shortly left his post in June 2010 to film the third installment of the Harold & Kumar series, A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, returning to his White House job upon the movie’s ending. In July 2011, he again left the White House to accept a role in the television series How I Met Your Mother.
From 2016 to 2019, he played Seth Wright in the political drama Designated Survivor, where he also served as a consultant on the show. He also served as host of the game show Superhuman. In 2019, Penn portrayed Garrett Modi in the NBC sitcom series Sunnyside. In 2020, he went on to host a political talk miniseries on Freeform called Kal Penn Approves This Message.

Josh is engaged to his partner of 11 years Kal Penn a former White House staff member and also an actor. They have been together and have led a private relationship until the release of Josh’s book – You Can’t Be Serious that led to the information about their relationship going public. Penn revealed that the two met while he was residing in Washington D.C. In an interview with PEOPLE, Penn said, “I’ve always been very public with everybody I’ve personally interacted with. Whether it’s somebody that I meet at a bar, if Josh and I are out or we’re talking to friends,” Penn says. “I’m really excited to share our relationship with readers. But Josh, my partner, my parents, and my brother, four people who I’m closest to in the family, are fairly quiet. They don’t love attention and shy away from the limelight.”
In his description in the book, on their first date, his partner Josh arrived at his apartment with an 18-pack of Coors Light and b) instantly switched the TV to watch NASCAR.
“I thought, ‘This obviously is not going to work out,” he recalls. “I have one day off from The White House and this dude is unironically watching cars go around and make left turns? Next thing you know, it’s been a couple of months and we’re watching NASCAR every Sunday. I’m like, ‘What is happening?’ I wanted the reader to enjoy the love and the humor through all of those stories.”

Josh’s partner also came out narrating about his sexuality to PEOPLE. He said, “I discovered my own sexuality relatively late in life compared to many other people. There’s no timeline on this stuff. People figure their s*** out at different times in their lives, so I’m glad I did when I did.”
Talking of the engagement: “I really hope that people enjoy the book. I hope it makes people laugh and smile,” he says. “Obviously I am engaged to a man and our families will be there for the wedding. The big disagreement now is whether it’s a huge wedding or a tiny wedding. I want the big-ass Indian wedding. Josh, hates attention, [has said], ‘Or we could just do a quick 20-minute thing with our families and that’s it.’ So we have to meet halfway in the middle.”
