Rose Ayling-Ellis born Rose Lucinda Ayling-Ellis is a British actress. She is known for portraying the role of Frankie Lewis on the BBC soap opera EastEnders. She is deaf and a British Sign Language user. She was competing in the 19th series of Strictly Come Dancing; Ayling-Ellis is the first deaf person to compete in the series. Together with her dance partner Giovanni Pernice, the duo became the winners of the series in its 19th season.
As a child, she took part in a filming weekend run by the National Deaf Children’s Society. During the weekend, she met deaf film director Ted Evans, who later cast her in his award-winning short film The End. She then applied to Deafinitely Youth Theatre.
She has taken part in a number of stage productions, among which Mother Courage (Royal Exchange) Faith, Hope And Charity R&D (National Theatre), and Herons Workshop (Lyric Hammersmith). Her TV credits include Summer of Rockets and Casualty (BBC 2). She also appears in The Vamps music video for Middle of the Night, and in the short Almost with Vilma Jackson.
Since 2020, Ayling-Ellis has been playing the character of Frankie Lewis in the BBC’s long-running soap opera, Eastenders. Her character was originally written by the deaf journalist and scriptwriter Charlie Swinbourne.
She was participating in the nineteenth series of Strictly Come Dancing. She is the first deaf person to compete in the show since its beginning in 2004. She was dancing with Giovanni Pernice. The pair scored 40 (full marks) for their tango on the Halloween-themed programme aired on October 30, 2021, the earliest in the show’s history. Betting at the time put Ayling-Ellis at 9/4, having been one of two favorites to be the series winner since week one. In the final, the du became the winners.
