Lou Cutell was an American film, television, and theatre actor, who was perhaps best known for his appearance as “Amazing Larry” in the 1985 film Pee-wee’s Big Adventure. He started his career in 1961, appearing in the Broadway play The Young Abe Lincoln, portraying the character William Berry. He also played Dr. Brainard in Honey I Shrunk the Kids and Abe on Grey’s Anatomy. He was also cast in How I Met Your Mother and played the father of Bob Einstein’s Funkhouser character on Curb Your Enthusiasm and had a multi-episode arc on Alice.
Later in his career, he started his television career in 1964, as guest-starring in The Dick Van Dyke Show, playing the role of Vinnie. He continued his career, mostly appearing in film and television, over the years.
In the 1970s–1990s, he appeared and guest-starred in numerous film and television programs, including, Seinfeld, The Love Boat, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Alice, The Bob Newhart Show, Rhinoceros, The World’s Greatest Lover, The Wild Wild West, The Mary Tyler Moore Show (and its spin-off Lou Grant), Barney Miller, The Black Marble, The Odd Couple II, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, My Mom’s a Werewolf and Bridget Loves Bernie.
In the 1990s–2000s, Cutell co-wrote and was cast in the Broadway play Sicilan Bachelor, in which he played the role of “Don Cola” and co-wrote the play with Norma Helms and Tino Trischitta. In 2010, Cutell co-wrote with Joao Machado and starred in the Broadway play Viagara Falls. He played the role of “Charley Millhouse” and starred with Bernie Kopell, who played the role of “Moe Crubbs”.
He went on appearing in film and television. He played a recurring role in Betty White’s Off Their Rockers and mainly guest-starred in television. His final television role was from the television program Grey’s Anatomy, in 2015. He received his bachelor’s degree at the University of California.

On Sunday, Furman posted about Cutell on Facebook, writing, “After 91 years, and a great life, my friend Lou Cutell went home. A film, theater, and character actor. Big Larry in ‘Pee Wee’s Big Adventure,’ Ass Man in ‘Seinfeld,’ Abe in Grey’s Anatomy S12, E4. He took me to Lucille Ball’s house in 1986. Rest in peace Lou.”
“Besides my own film, my favorite thing Lou acted in was when he played an alien doctor in 1965’s ‘Frankenstein Meets the Spacemonster.’ In real life, he was wonderful—sweet, caring, and unassuming.
