Kathryn Kates was an American actress majorly recognized fr her recurring role on Seinfeld in the episodes “The Rye” and “The Dinner Party.” She started her career in Los Angeles. Kates is one of 25 actors (including fellow member John Larroquette) who are founding members of The Colony Theatre. With her colleague, they took up residence at The Studio Theatre in the Silver Lake District of Los Angeles. For the next 25 years, she along with her colleagues there produced award-winning stage productions. During the first six years of The Colony’s existence (1975 to 1981), Kates, along with Barbara Beckley, was co-general manager of The Colony and together they produced all of the company’s plays.
She has the distinction of being the only actress to ever play opposite John Larroquette as his mother, lover, and wife: as his mother in Enter Laughing (Cast Theatre, 1974), his wife in A Company of Wayward Saints (Colony Theatre 1978);[5] and his lover in The Lady’s Not For Burning (Colony Theatre, 1979). She also appeared in many other of The Colony’s L.A. Drama Critics’ Circle award-winning productions such as The Grapes Of Wrath and Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles (El Rey Theatre with Ed Harris). She passed on after battling lung cancer on January 22, 2022, at the age of 73. Her representatives confirmed the news of her demise on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, to CNN.
“After a long, hard-fought battle with lung cancer, Kathryn passed away peacefully this past Saturday surrounded by her brother Josh, his wife Sue Ann, and her sister Mallory. We can confirm that Kathryn was 73 years old,” Headline Talent Agency said to CNN in a statement.
“Kathryn was our client for many years, and about one year ago, after finding out that the lung cancer she was treated for 20 years ago had returned, we grew even closer. She was incredibly brave, thoughtful, wise, and loving. Kathryn approached every role she ever played, as well as her daily life with the greatest of passion. We will do our best to honor her incredible legacy. The world truly lost one of the good ones.”
The agency posted a tribute to Kates from its verified Instagram account on Monday: “Our mighty @officialkathrynkates has passed away. She will always be remembered and adored in our hearts as the powerful force of nature she was. She loved this craft and had enough patience to fill 10 ships. A true icon. We will miss you.”
