Mary Forrest is an American producer and the wife of Richard Engel an American journalist and author who is the chief foreign correspondent for NBC News. He was assigned to that position on April 18, 2008, after serving as the network’s Middle East correspondent and Beirut bureau chief. Prior to joining NBC in May 2003, Engel reported on the start of the 2003 war in Iraq for ABC News as a freelance journalist in Baghdad.

She is a mother of two sons: Henry, born in September 2015, and Theodore, born in August 2019. Henry Engel was born with Rett syndrome, a genetic disorder that is extremely rare in males; he died on August 9, 2022, at the age of 6.
Her husband, Richard Engel, NBC News chief foreign correspondent, announced on Twitter Thursday morning (August 18, 2022) that his son, Henry, has passed away. He wrote on Twitter, “Our beloved son Henry passed away. He had the softest blue eyes, an easy smile, and a contagious giggle. We always surrounded him with love and he returned it, and so much more. Mary and Richard.”
Henry suffered from a genetic disorder known as Rett syndrome, which is usually present in girls and occurs when genes on the x-chromosome mutate. The six-year-old was diagnosed as still an infant in 2017. The disorder affects cognitive and motor skills.
