Dan Walker is an English journalist, newsreader, and television presenter currently presenting 5 News on Channel 5. He presented Football Focus from 2009 to 2021. He also hosted BBC Breakfast from 2016 to April 2022. He also presented shows on BBC Radio 5 Live and has presented sport on the BBC News Channel, as well as regularly reporting for Final Score and Match of the Day.
His professional broadcasting career kicked off with work experience at Sheffield’s Hallam FM. He gained work experience after winning a competition for young sports commentators. In 1999, he moved to a full-time career with a 4-year stint as a sports presenter and commentator for Manchester’s Key 103 radio. They were eliminated in week 11. In September 2021 Walker led tributes to his co-presenter Louise Minchin who left BBC Breakfast to enjoy the respite from 20 years of enduring early nights and 3:45 am wake-up alarms.
On April 4, 2022, Walker announced, via a Twitter video, that he would be leaving the BBC to move to Channel 5. On June 6, 2022, he made his Channel 5 news debut, reporting live from 10 Downing Street when prime minister Boris Johnson survived a no-confidence vote.
His charitable activities include being an active patron of several charities like the Sheffield Children’s Hospital charity, alongside Jessica Ennis-Hill, Michael Vaughan, and Lee Westwood. He climbed Mount Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief with a number of other celebrities in 2019. He studied at Ifield Primary School, Three Bridges Middle School, and Hazelwick Secondary School.
