Mark Stacey is a Welsh collector, valuer, and auctioneer. He is also a writer and television personality who has made regular appearances on BBC programs as an antique expert. Prior to joining the antique trade, he worked as a residential social worker, initially as a dealer before working with several auction houses. He was born in Neath, Glamorgan, South Wales, and then moved to London and worked for the Bonhams and Sotheby’s auction houses. After a while, he became head of Decorative Arts and later Director of Hamptons/Dreweatt Neate Fine Art.
He is always seen on a regular basis as an antique expert on the BBC programs such as Bargain Hunt, Flog It!, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is and Antiques Road Trip. In June Stacey participated in a light-hearted interview on the BBC lunchtime program The Daily Politics where he was asked for advice about the value of items owned by famous people, in the wake of the UK Parliament’s expenses scandal.
He opened an antique shop in Kemptown, Brighton, East Sussex in 2011. After a while in 2014, he went ahead to become an auctioneer and valuer with Reeman Dansie auctioneers in Colchester, Essex, and found an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus, propped up in an Essex house, which sold for £13,500.
