Jeanne Vander Myde a real estate agent and the widow of Reagan administration defense department official Paul Vander Myde. She also remarried after Paul’s death to John Warner an American attorney and politician who served as the United States Secretary of the Navy from 1972 to 1974 and a five-term Republican U.S. Senator from Virginia from 1979 to 2009. Warner served as Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee from 1999 to 2001, and again from 2003 to 2007. He also served as the Chair of the Senate Rules Committee from 1995 to 1999.
Warner was the sixth husband of actress Elizabeth Taylor, whom he married before being elected to the Senate. He was a veteran of the Second World War and Korean War and was one of five World War II veterans serving in the Senate at the time of his retirement. He did not seek reelection in 2008. After leaving the Senate, he worked for the law firm of Hogan Lovells, where he had previously been employed before joining the United States Department of Defense as the Under Secretary of the Navy during the presidency of Richard Nixon in 1969. At the time of his death, Warner’s 2002 re-election remains the most recent time that a Republican has won a U.S. Senate election in the state.

Warner died from heart failure at his home in Alexandria, Virginia on May 25, 2021, at age 94. Warner died late on Tuesday, with his wife and daughter at his side, his chief of staff, Susan Magill, said in an email to family and friends, according to a Politico report on Wednesday. The Washington Post said he died in Alexandria, Virginia.
President Joe Biden led tributes to Warner, saying he “lived an extraordinary life of service and accomplishment”.
In a statement issued Wednesday, Biden said: “I had the privilege of serving alongside John in the Senate for three decades. The John Warner I knew was guided by two things: his conscience and our Constitution. And, when acting in accordance with both, he neither wavered in his convictions nor was concerned with the consequences.”
