Alistair Appleton is a British television presenter, broadcaster, psychotherapist, and meditation teacher. Currently, he is the presenter of BBC One’s television program Escape to the Country.

Appleton was born in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent. He went to study at St. Johns Catholic School in Portsmouth for his 10 O-levels and 3 A-levels. After that, he proceeded to Gonville and Caius College, at the University of Cambridge, in 1988 and took up a course in English Literature. While in school, Appleton sang in the chapel choir, acted in a number of productions, and rowed for his team in college. He was a member of the European Theatre Group of Cambridge University. He went on to graduate with a second upper degree and left the United Kingdom for Poland. While in Poland, he started writing poems, editing a children’s anthology as well as teaching at the University of Gdansk in Poland.

Afterward, he began teaching English in eastern Germany and became a translator and journalist for Deutsche Welle television. His popularity was propelled when he became a presenter for Deutsche Welle’s youth popular culture show “Heat”. He made his way back to the United Kingdom in 1999 where he acted in a series of commercials such as BBC One’s Garden Invaders (2001), Cash in the Attic (2002–05), and BBC Food’s Stately Suppers (2005). He was also cast in Doctor Who’s episode of Army of Ghosts. He has hosted many television specials that include The Proms.

Appleton has been cast in the German film “The 8th Deadly Sin”. He has also appeared in Footballers’ Wives, and the documentary The Man Who Drank the Universe. Beginning in 2000, Appleton pursued meditation particularly training in the Buddhist tradition. Since 2004, he has also worked outside Buddhism working with ayahuasca at the Spirit Vine Ayahuasca Retreat Center in Brazil. He studied with the contemporary Vajrayana teacher, Reggie Ray. He graduated with an MA in Advanced psychotherapy at the Minster Centre in London in 2014 and is a psychotherapist in Brighton.
