Alma Powell born Alma Vivian Johnson is an American audiologist and the widow of military and political figure Colin Powell. Her Husband was the former United States Secretary of State, National Security Advisor, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He died on October 18, 2021, while undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma. He died at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center of complications from COVID-19 at the age of 84. He had been vaccinated, but his myeloma compromised his immune system. His funeral service took place on Friday, November 5, 2021, at the Washington National Cathedral.
Other than being an audiologist, she is the chair of America’s Promise, the nation’s largest partnership dedicated to improving the lives of children and youth. She has also authored two children’s books, America’s Promise and My Little Red Wagon. In the year 2011, she was named NASBE’s National Education Policy Leader of the Year along with her husband.
She graduated from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, and went on to study speech pathology and audiology at Emerson College in Boston.

“General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19,” the Powell family wrote on Facebook, noting he was fully vaccinated. Powell had multiple myeloma, a cancer of plasma cells that suppresses the body’s immune response, as well as Parkinson’s, Peggy Cifrino, Powell’s longtime chief of staff, confirmed to CNN. Even if fully vaccinated against Covid-19, those who are immunocompromised are at greater risk from the virus.
“We have lost a remarkable and loving husband, father, grandfather, and a great American,” the family said.
President Joe Biden, calling Powell a “dear friend”, said he had embodied the “highest ideals of both warrior and diplomat”.
Condoleezza Rice, his successor as secretary of state and the first black woman in the role, called him “a truly great man” whose “devotion to our nation was not limited to the many great things he did while in uniform or during his time spent in Washington. Much of his legacy will live on in the countless number of young lives he touched.”
