Ben Roberts was a British actor most famous for his portrayal of Chief Inspector Derek Conway in the ITV British television series, The Bill. He starred in the hit ITV police drama from 1987 to 2000. His first television role was starring in the series A Woman’s Place, alongside Ralph Bates in 1978. He later appeared in the crime-action drama The Professionals and played an extra in Doctor Who in 1984. Ben’s biggest role came in 1987 when he landed the part of Chief Inspector Derek Conway in The Bill. He would play the role for 13 years until he left the show in 2000.
He continued to act and appeared in two different roles in Doctors, once in 2010 and then in 2012. His other television roles included The Queen’s Nose, Tales of Sherwood Forest, and Sooty Heights. His last major television role came in 2016 when he played Isaac Sandison in Casualty. His film roles included starring in the 2011 romantic drama Jane Eyre as Briggs, alongside Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska. He also starred in Another Year, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016), and A Little Chaos. In 2019 he had a part in the Danish biographical film Daniel, which was his last listed acting job.

He died on Monday, June 7, 2021, aged 70. In a statement given by his agents LCM Limited, posted on Twitter, they said: “Remembering the wonderful Ben Roberts who sadly passed away on Monday. Best known as Chief Inspector Derek Conway in The Bill & he had an extensive career in theatre, TV & film. Our thoughts are with his wife Helen and family at this time.”
Tributes have poured in for him on Twitter since the news of his demise was announced. His former co-star Ben Peyton referred him to as “a superb actor and an absolutely hilarious man. We were both axed from The Bill on the same day back in 2001. He came to my dressing room and said: ‘They made a mistake with our names. You were supposed to be sacked twice!'”
