Hlengiwe Mkhize born Hlengiwe Buhle was a Minister of Higher Education and Training (South Africa), having been appointed to the position by former President Jacob Zuma since October 17, 2017, after previously serving as Deputy Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services in the government of South Africa. In February 2018, she was sacked from the cabinet by President Cyril Ramaphosa. First elected to the National Assembly of South Africa in 2009 as part of the African National Congress. She was the also chairperson of the June and Andrew Mlangeni Foundation.

Mkhize was a founding member, and trustee, of the Children and Violence Trust since 1995, had been a trustee of the Malibongwe Business Trust since 2005. She was a senior lecturer and researcher at Wits University from 1990 until 1995. She was a board member of the South African Prisoner’s Organisation for Human Rights from 1994 to 1995; Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Commissioner and Chairperson of the Reparations and Rehabilitation committee from 1995 to 2003. Prior to her appointment, she was ambassador to the Netherlands, had a short stint as Deputy Minister for Correctional Services, and thereafter, from 2014 to 2017, served as the Deputy Minister of Telecommunications and Postal Services.

Her last public appearance was when she attended a Parliamentary session on August 19, 2021, and cast her vote for the Speaker of Parliament in Cape Town. She held a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Social Work, and Sociology from the University of Zululand; a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology, and a Master of Clinical Psychology from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Hlengiwe Mkhize Death

She died on September 16, 2021, aged 69. Her death was confirmed by her family who, in a media statement, said: “It is with heavy hearts that the Mkhize family confirms the passing of our wife, mother, and grandmother, Professor Hlengiwe Mkhize this morning at Wits University Donald Gordon Medical Centre in Johannesburg. Mkhize was diagnosed with lung cancer in March 2017 and bravely managed the illness throughout” until “she was admitted to hospital on August 31, 2021, and lost her battle this morning,” read the statement from the family.

UDM leader Bantu Holomisa paid tribute to her on Twitter shortly after news of her death broke.

He wrote: “My condolences to her family and her Organisation, ANC. She rode to prominence when she was one of the TRC Commissioners. A very passionate individual about her work. RIP Sisi”.

Mkhize was appointed to the position in 2019.

Her cause of death is yet to be confirmed. Mkhize died on September 16, 2021, aged 69. Since 2017, she had however battled lung cancer.
