James is a nuclear scientist from Cumbria. He is a cast member of The Great British Bake Off series 13 that premiered on Tuesday, September 13, 2022, at 8 pm on Channel 4 and All 4. The baking competition will then air on a weekly basis, with new episodes arriving on Channel 4 every Tuesday night. The show will also air on Netflix premiering on Friday, September 16, 2022. The competition comprises twelve contestants in which one is eliminated in every episode.
According to him, he is a self-proclaimed proud kilt wearer. He was brought up in Glasgow but relocated to England following his university studies. He graduated in 2019 with a degree in Applied Chemistry from the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. He loves the technical side of baking but is in his element when he makes his bakes his own, with his signature ‘child-friendly horror’ style, inspired by his love of slasher movies. His favorite flavors are anything autumnal, such as mixed spice, apples, and caramel. In his first attempt at baking, he burnt pancakes in his mother’s kitchen.

According to James, he never imagined he would make it onto the Channel 4 baking show, saying: “To be honest, it still feels like a dream! I never thought I’d be considered and, now that I’ve met all the other bakers, still can’t believe I somehow made the cut – those bakers are crazy good.”
Asked where gets his baking knowledge from, he added: “My mum taught me the basics, and our constant back and forth of ideas has helped keep me motivated but it was after I moved out for university that I started to learn more from online videos and demonstrations. Once COVID hit, I just went baking daft and fumbled my way through as much as I could – when there was flour shortage… those were dark days for bakers.”
