Maryanne Oketch is a seminary student from Ajax, Ontario, Canada. She was crowned the Sole Survivor of the American reality television show in its 42nd season. She was a contestant and a finalist in the American competition television series Survivor. The season premiered on March 9, 2022, on CBS in the United States. The other finalists that were battling out against her were Mike Turner and Romeo Escobar. According to her profile, she states that her greatest accomplishment is being able to write an article for her school newspaper that led to her being invited to consult with her university’s Equity and Inclusion officer on creating a better framework and support for Black students at McMaster University. Being able to use her voice for change that not only benefitted her was so empowering.
She goes on to describe herself as a great listener. She states that just because she talks a lot, it does not mean she is not listening. She added, ” People are so used to hearing me when I am there, so when I am quiet, people usually don’t think I’m there and I can take notice of what they are saying. Also, I check in on people and let them vent to me, which gives me more context about them that can help guide my future decisions.”
According to her, her mother is her greatest hero as she was born into poverty in a village in Kenya as the youngest of five. She describes her mother as being hardworking and managed to get herself out of poverty and became a doctor in Kenya and was able to provide for her grandmother. Her mother also supported her father’s dreams and went ahead to become a doctor in Canada while having three young children. She also dealt with systemic racism in academic medicine. She states that her mother sacrificed and worked so hard to give her family a better life and never faltered from her dreams. She aspires to be like her as she says her mother changed her life.
She says the past Survivor she will play the game most like is Davie. She described Davie as someone who had loyalty to many people, had a strong core alliance, and was social. She also added that Davie was able to find idols and win challenges and play idols correctly to further his game. David’s attribute that sums it all up is that he had so much fun when he was on the island, no matter if he was on the top or bottom of his tribe. Davie had the path to 6th place, and she will perfect it to 1st.
She believes she will be the Sole Survivor because she is a social person, and SURVIVOR at its core is a numbers game. She also says she has lived in diverse cities and has also been in situations where she was the only black person. But in every situation, she thrived and SURVIVOR is another place where her resilience and personality will shine. She added that she never goes down without a fight. When all hope is lost, she will be searching for idols, talking to people, and convincing them that her staying is best for everyone. She remains firm that she will win SURVIVOR and will do everything in her power to do so.
