Mayra Flores is a Mexican American politician and health practitioner from the state of Texas. A member of the Republican Party, she is the Representative-elect for Texas’s 34th congressional district. She won the seat following her victory in a special election, held on June 14, 2022, following Congressman Filemon Vela Jr.’s resignation in March 2022. She will be the first Mexican-born congresswoman in U.S. history.

She became a respiratory care practitioner in 2014. She currently works caring for the elderly and disabled with chronic respiratory illnesses and has been on the front lines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Before her congressional campaigns, Flores worked in the Hidalgo County Republican Party as chair of Hispanic Outreach. Before getting elected to Congress, she had promoted the QAnon conspiracy theory.

Flores declared her candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in Texas’s 34th congressional district after the March 2021 announcement of incumbent Democratic representative Filemon Vela Jr. that he would not seek re-election to the seat in 2022. She ran her campaign appealing to Hispanic and Latino Americans and their disillusionment towards the Democratic Party, which they have historically supported in the South Texas region. Following the establishment of new congressional districts as a part of the 2020 redistricting cycle, incumbent Democrat Vicente Gonzalez of the 15th district announced his candidacy for the new 34th district. On March 1, 2022, both Flores and Gonzalez won their respective partisan primaries and will face each other in the general election on November 8, 2022.

In March 2022, Vela announced his early resignation from Congress. Shortly after Vela’s announcement, Flores declared her intent to run for the special election, which was held on June 14, 2022, to fill the vacancy. Gonzalez did not run in the special election. Flores defeated Democrat Dan Sanchez of Harlingen to win the election, she earned 50.98% of the vote against Sanchez who earned 43.33% of the vote, avoiding a runoff.

During the special election, she reported $752,000 in contributions, while Sanchez reported $46,000. Flores flipped a Democratic House seat to a Republican one.
