Regé-Jean Page is an actor of British and Zimbabwean descent. He has featured in a number of films and series such as the 2016 Roots where he portrayed the character, Chicken George. In the year 2018 and 2019, he also featured several times on the ABC Legal drama, For The People. As of 2020, he is starring alongside actress Phoebe Dynevor as Daphne Bridgerton in the Netflix drama Bridgerton where he acts as Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings.
His career took off in theatre where he was in shows like The History Boys and The Merchant of Venice before he proceeded to television taking a role in Waterloo Road in 2015 when it was at its last season.
In the year 2016, he premiered portraying the character of Chicken George in Roots, which is a modification of the 1977 novel, Roots: The Saga of an American Family. The production together with how he performed it got critical approval. In the same year, he starred in Spark. In 2017, he was part of For The People, a legal drama series that got called off after the release of two seasons. He also made an appearance in Sylvie’s Love and Mortal Engines. After this is when he got the chance to act as the dominant male character in Bridgerton. The drama series is a production of the legendary producer Shonda Rhimes.
As a result of his work on the screens, he has been nominated for; Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series among other nominations based on the series Bridgerton.
He grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe, Africa then went back to London for his secondary school. Speaking about his childhood, he said, “my family was rather spread out — I have family in South Africa, Australia, Sweden, Grenada, Florida — so you make pit stops and you grow your perspective.” Of Zimbabwe, he had this to say, “It’s the most beautiful place in the world. Everyone says this about their own country, but it’s objectively beautiful. And because it was so young I think there’s a genuine generosity in people from Zimbabwe, which is slowly being chipped away at, as we hit our terrible teens and realize the world is a harsh, cold, difficult place that one must be strong enough to survive.”
When he ent back to the UK, he became involved in acting as a hobby during Saturday school. He said that when he joined the National Youth Theatre it totally remodeled his course. He spent two years practicing and taking up auditions and he finally got a breakthrough to join the Drama Centre in London. He went on to graduate in 2013.
