Thierry Mugler Biography – Thierry Mugler Wiki

Thierry Mugler born Manfred Thierry Mugler was a French fashion designer, creative director, and creative adviser of Mugler. In the 1970s, he launched his eponymous fashion house; and quickly rose to prominence in the decades after for his avant-garde, architectural, hyperfeminine and theatrical approach to haute couture. He was one of the first designers to champion diversity in his runway shows, which often tackled racism and ageism, and incorporated non-traditional models such as Drag Queens, Porn-stars, and Transgender women. In 2002, he retired from the brand and returned in 2013 as the creative adviser.

Born in Strasbourg in December 1948, he arrived in Paris aged 20 and created his own label “Cafe de Paris” in 1973, a year before founding Thierry Mugler. The LGBTQ community was a frequent source of talent and inspiration for the designer. He cast trans models in his runway shows as early as the 1980s, and frequently collaborated with drag artists and club kids on and off the runway, including corsetmaker Mr. Pearl. By the late 1990s, the Mugler name was associated more with fragrance than fashion, thanks to his blockbuster perfume Angel. The rights to his name were acquired by cosmetics giant Clarins in 1997, and that fragrance and its offshoots, remain bestsellers. In 2002, the fashion division of Mugler shut down but the brand was revived in 2010 under the creative direction of stylist Nicola Formichetti and later Casey Cadwallader.

His use of corsetry and his exaggerated approach to the female body has drawn criticism, but the designer was no less extreme with his own physique. In 2019, he posed for a nude photoshoot with Interview Magazine and discussed his exhaustive body-building routine and cosmetic surgeries. “I think it’s important for people to be a complete realization of themselves. I have always been fascinated by the human body, and I wanted to pay homage to what it can do,” he said. In 2019, the designer was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition, Thierry Mugler: Couturissime, which debuted in Montreal before touring Paris in 2021. He had been due to announce new collaborations early this week, his agent Jean-Baptiste Rougeot told Agence France-Presse.

He was born in Strasbourg. His passion led him to focus more on drawing than on school, and at the age of 9, he started to study classical dance. By 14, he joined the ballet corps for the Rhin Opera (Opéra national du Rhin). At the same time, Mugler started formal interior design training at the Strasbourg School of Decorative Arts.

Mugler was born in Strasbourg. His father was a doctor from whom he inherited surgical precision, his mother a housewife whose elegance he was transfixed by, and he spent his teenage years dancing in a local dance company, trying unsuccessfully to shake the desire to leave home. “Nothing suited me,” he later told The Independent. “I found everything very, very boring, was very, very ill at ease and very, very lonely.” So at 20, he moved to Paris, where he began making his own clothes — army coats that trailed to the ground, trousers dyed every color of the rainbow. In 1974, he introduced his own brand.
