Tommy DeBarge born Thomas Keith Debarge was an American vocalist and bass guitarist. He was one of the musical DeBarge siblings and a member of the ’70s R&B group Switch. The group went on to produce hit songs like “There’ll Never Be,” “I Call Your Name” and “Love Over & Over Again” and he influenced other bands including legendary DeBarge –– a group made up of their siblings.

Tommy and his brother Bobby, who died in 1995 from complications of AIDS, were founding members of Switch in 1976. This was after his brother Bobby left the group White Heat which he was part of initially. The group (Switch) which also included Phillip Ingram, Eddie Fullen, Gregory Williams, and Jody Sims, gave birth to three tracks while signed to Motown Records that hit the top 10 on the Billboard R&B Chart including “There’ll Never Be” in 1978, “I Call Your Name” in 1979 and “Love Over and Over Again” in 1981.

With his brother Bobby, the two siblings then left Switch after they released their album Switch V, and the group left Motown and signed to Total Experience/RCA. In 2012, he released an autobiography titled There’ll Never Be: A Story of Forgiveness.

According to TMZ, Debarge died on Thursday, October 21, 2021, at the age of 64. His family said he had battled with kidney and liver failure for many years. A few weeks ago, his health declined and he had to be hospitalized. His daughter, Marina, told TMZ that her father had also battled COVID-19 earlier this year (2021) but didn’t complain of any complications during his diagnosis.

His condition got worse within the last few weeks, a family member told the outlet. His daughter saying he fought until the end. He passed away in the hospital on Thursday, October 21, 2021.

“Tommy has gained his wings,” his sister Etterline “Bunny” DeBarge wrote on Facebook with a video that accompanied the words. “Rest peacefully in Heaven, Dearest Thomas DeBarge.”
