Tracey Collins is an American educator and author. She is the First Lady-elect of New York City through her domestic partnership with politician Eric Adams. She is currently the Senior Youth Development Director for the New York City Department of Education since 2008 and has served as an elementary school teacher and principal. She chaired Adam’s Educational Taskforce when he was a state senator. She is the author of the book Sweet Promptings, an inspirational book about kindness, and is currently writing a children’s book.
Her partner Adams served as an officer in the New York City Transit Police and then the New York City Police Department for over two decades, retiring at the rank of captain. He served in the New York State Senate from 2006 to 2013, representing the 20th Senate district in Brooklyn. In November 2013, Adams was elected Brooklyn Borough President. He was reelected in November 2017 and is the first African American to hold the position.
On November 17, 2020, Adams announced his candidacy for mayor of New York City. Early polls showed Adams trailing only Andrew Yang, who benefited from name recognition from his 2020 Democratic presidential run. On July 6, 2021, the Associated Press declared Adams the winner of the 2021 Democratic mayoral primary. Adams faced Republican Curtis Sliwa in the general election and easily prevailed. Adams will become mayor on January 1, 2022.
