Troy Roberts is an American journalist based in New York City. He is a television news reporter as well as a correspondent for 48 Hours Mystery. Roberts was born and brought up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He later attended the University of California, Berkeley, and graduated in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science.
Following school, Roberts worked as a host and producer of a weekly newsmagazine show at KPIX-TV, a San Francisco-based, CBS-owned television company from 1985 to 1987. After that, he became a reporter for KATU-TV based in Portland, Oregon from 1987 to 1990. That same year in 1990, he relocated to New York and worked at WCBS-TV which is also owned by CBS. There, he reported for Channel 2’s This Morning and also served as an anchor for local news segments for CBS Morning News. He joined CBS News as a co-anchor in 1993 working on the overnight broadcast of Up to the Minute, interviewing various newsmakers and personalities. Roberts co-anchored CBS Morning News from 1995 to 1996.
At CBS, the journalist has served almost in every area. He has been an alternate news reader for CBS This Morning and substitute anchor for the network weekend editions of the “CBS Evening News, anchored the true crime series, “Hard Evidence, served as a correspondent for the “CBS Evening News, CBS News Sunday Morning” and “CBS This Morning. His stories have covered hurricanes, earthquakes and tornadoes, Royal Wedding, a rise in hate crimes, international adoption scams, an investigation into several destructive cults, the events of 9/11, and dog sledding in Alaska with model Lauren Hutton.
Roberts created and co-executive produced the OWN network documentary, “Sag Harbor in 2015. The program looked inside one of America’s most exclusive and historically significant African-American beach communities in New York’s Hamptons. In 2017 Roberts joined NBC Universal where he has worked as an NBC special Dateline correspondent. He is the anchor of the Oxygen series “Killer Motive.”
Roberts won an award for 48 Hours and has been serving in that role since 1998 on CBS. He has earned an Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia Award and two Emmy awards. He received his first Emmy for coverage of the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta and the bombing that occurred during the event. Roberts distinguished himself with his Emmy-winning report on the manhunt and capture of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects in 2013. He was also part of the team coverage of the Newtown, Conn., elementary school shooting which earned CBS News a 2014 DuPont-Columbia award.
