Vince Fontaine was an Indigenous musician who was a founding member and leader of the Juno-award winning Canadian roots-rock band Eagle & Hawk based in Winnipeg, and folk-pop band Indian City. He was best recognized for his work ethic early on and later as a mentor for young Indigenous musicians in Winnipeg and beyond.

He is remembered as a member of Sagkeeng First Nation, Fontaine, and his band Eagle & Hawk won a Juno for Best Music of Aboriginal Canada Recording in 2002 for their album On and On. The award was one of many, as the guitarist and songwriter’s projects earned honors from the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, Western Canadian Music Awards, Native American Music Awards, and many others.

He passed on on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at the age of 60 after suffering a heart attack. His bandmate of 25 years Jay Bodner released the news of the cause of his death. Bodner and Fontaine wrapped a couple of shows in December 2021 and were discussing future shows amid the pandemic. Bodner said he is at a loss. “Right now I am just really processing,” he said.”We had a really fantastic run.” On Tuesday evening, NDP MLA Nahanni Fontaine (his niece) said in a social media post that Vince Fontaine had died suddenly.

“On behalf of our Fontaine family, it is with terrible sadness and shock that I announce the sudden passing of my dear Uncle Vince Fontaine today: Tuesday, January 11, 2022,” the post reads. “Vince’s love of music was only outshone by his measureless devotion to his family, friends, and community.”

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra also remembered the deceased in a note to its subscribers. “Our collective hearts are broken at the news that Vince Fontaine, founder of the JUNO-award winning group Eagle & Hawk has passed away,” they said. “Mr. Fontaine has worked extensively with the WSO, especially during the run of the WSO’s annual Indigenous Music Festival (2009-2011) with then music director Alexander Mickelthwaite. Mr. Fontaine was the festival manager and an instrumental part of the intent and meaning behind the event. Our condolences go out to Mr. Fontaine’s family and friends. This is a tragic loss for Manitoba’s indigenous community and Manitoba’s music community overall.”
