Yoko Shimada was a Japanese actress, best known to Western audiences for her portrayal of Mariko in the 1980 miniseries Shōgun. She was the only female member of Shōgun’s massive cast of Japanese actors shown speaking English, for which she relied on a dialogue coach, as she was not fluent in the language at the time. Her English improved greatly during the production, however, allowing her to work in a few English language films during the 1980s and 1990s.

In 1981, she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Drama and was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her work on Shōgun.

Her TV debut was in the 1970 drama Osanazuma. She rose to prominence for her performance as the heroine in the 1971 sequel to the Japanese television series “Hyoten” (Freezing Point), based on the best-selling novel of the same name. She also appeared in Japanese films such as “Inugami-ke no ichizoku” (The Inugami family), directed by Kon Ichikawa, and “Suna no utsuwa” (Castle of sand), directed by Yoshitaro Nomura. Her last screen role was in the 2016 Saiga Toshiro drama “Kanon.”

She also performed on Castle of Sand and in Go Go Kamen Rider. Very sad news for 🇯🇵 cinema & television. All my condolences to her family, friends, and work colleagues.’
